Is it okay to want to be a leader and not a follower?

I feel as tho I'd rather put people in directions rather than have them put me in theirs... I was used to being a follower for a long time and then i finally overloaded during puberty and rebelled... is it okay to want to be a strong character who exerts his ideas since they've been held in for so long?
